Frequently Asked Questions
Version 2007-03-27
General Questions
1.1. What is it?
fdns.net is an service run by a small group of Unix junkies to create a simple system similar to the old ML.ORG system for pointing hosts/subdomains to IP addresses.
1.2. How do I sign up?
Navigate to the register button on the left side (User menu), fill out the form, wait for your email confirmation, and start using the system.
1.3.How much does it cost?
Nothing. No signup, monthly or other charges. We don’t want your credit card number, bank account number, or any information from you other than an email address, and that’s only so we can email you your password when you forget it.
1.4. I want to help out how?
If you have some spare CPU cycles, and a fast, underutilized Internet connection, we could use secondary nameservers for the root domain. Contact us if you’re willing to provide this sort of hepl.
1.5. One of your hosts/subdomains is pointed to my IP address and I want it removed
Use the contact for to to send the relevant information (IP, name pointed to it) and we’ll be happy to remove the offending pointer. If the abuse persists, we’ll remove the offending account record as well. Keep in mind our service is designed so any user can point any name to any IP address – that’s the whole point. Fortunately, we’ve only had a few instances of this sort of abues.
Host/Domain Questions
2.1. Do I want a HOST or a SUBDOMAIN?
If you just want a simple name (ie: mybox.fdns.net) then choose host. If you would like to administer a subdomain (ie: *.mydomain.fdns.net) then choose subdomain. Please note - before attempting to setup a subdomain on our DNS Manager, please have your DNS server setup correctly. (See 2.4 for further details on this).
2.2. What are valid characters for a host or subdomain name?
RFC1035 (and some others) request that hostnames be comprised of a letter, followed by up to 62 other letters, numbers or hyphens. DNS is NOT case sensitive. (IE: mybox.fdns.net is treated the same as MyBox.fdns.net). Valid host/subdomain names:
free-serve.fdns.net Invalid names: 9hosts.fdns.net
2.3. How to set up your system to be a host
On your system – nothing. Just enter your IP Address into the form on our website, wait for the next update, and that’s t.i To get your IP address: Unix: ifconfig –a
2.4. How to set up your system to serve a subdomain
You will need to setup to separate name servers (Yes, we check). Please checkout the zoneconf page for an example of this. Running your own name servers can be a security risk, so make sure you fully understand what you are doing, and take proper security precautions. These are in BIND 8.x format. We suggest that if you wish to learn more about DNS, purchase O'Reilly's DNS & BIND, either the 3rd or 4th Edition.
Dynamic/DHCP IP Address Questions
3.1. My ISP uses DHCP to assign me my IP address (most cable/dsl/dial up providers) – will this service work for me?
That depends on the provider. If you are on dial-up, you’re out of luck. For some cable and DSL providers, the IP address assigned to you stays the same until you disconnect. So if your system is online all the time, then chances are your IP will stay the same for quite some time. We’ve seen this time span months, even years
3.2. Will you ever support dynamic IP hosts/subdomains?
Probably not. Several other services do this quite well, so there isn’t much point to us doing it as well. It requires significantly more resources than we care to provide, as our zone files would need to be refreshed every 5 minutes or so – somethin that doesn’t scale well with over 700 hosts/subdomains
Technical Questions
4.1. How do I automate my updates if my IP changes?
windows people use blah, and unix use blah
4.2. What's powering this service?
An Intel based system. Version 1 was powered by PHP 3 and MySQL, Version 2 was powered by Java/Orion and MySQL. The current version (3) is powered by PHP5 and MySQL.
4.3. How often are the zonefiles refreshed?
We currently refresh the zone file hourly |
